5 Live Music Musts – May 2, 2014

Friday, May 02, 2014

Duke Robillard, renowned blues musician and Woonsocket native

This week, we focus our attention on some talented local artists including a few who will be receiving the ultimate Rhode Island musical honor. Read on for your “5 Live Music Musts.”

RI Music Hall of Fame Concerts

Tomorrow, May 3, the weekend ceremonies for the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame begin. It’s the third annual event for the organization which honors the state’s greatest musicians. The festivities begin at Lupo’s tomorrow at 7PM where 70’s R&B/Disco legends Tavares will be performing. The Fox Point band, known for their hits “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel,” and “More Than A Woman,” are well known for their hits on the massive selling Saturday Night Fever album. Tickets start at $20 for the 7PM show. This is a “not-to-be-missed” event!

Hall of Fame Part 2

On Sunday May 4, the formal Induction Ceremonies will be held at 2PM at the Hope Artiste Village. A concert follows at The Met, featuring inductees Duke Robillard, Cheryl Wheeler, and The Mark II. Robillard, an internationally known guitar player and former member of Roomful of Blues, has played with many greats including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Dr. John. Wheeler, a well known songwriter and folk singer, has penned hits for Garth Brooks, Bette Midler, and Dan Seals. Tickets for the Sunday event are $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Check GoLocal next week for a full review of the show.

Catie Curtis at Stone Soup

Tomorrow night, the Stone Soup Coffeehouse has its final concert of the season, welcoming singer-songwriter Catie Curtis to the Pawtucket venue. Hailed by the New Yorker as “a folk rock goddess,” Curtis has just released her 13th album, Flying Dream. The evening begins with the final round of the RISA songwriting contest. Finalists are Jane Fallon, Michael Laureanno, and Lenny Solomon. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door for the 8PM show.

Smith and Weeden at AS220

Saturday night also features a CD release show from local rockers Smith and Weeden. The new album highlights their 70’s influenced country-rock sound. They’ll be at AS220 in Providence along with Ravi Shavi and The Sun Parade. Show starts at 9PM, tickets are $7. Be prepared to rock and roll!

Pete Seeger Birthday Celebration

Finally tomorrow night, Music at Lilypads has a Pete Seeger birthday show planned. A number local folk musicans will be there including Joyce Katzberg, Jan Luby, Sandy Pliskin, Marcia Taylor and Jimmy Warren. Seeger’s spirit will be alive and well and they promise all the best from Pete’s catalog as well as a few sing-alongs. It’s almost sold out, a few tickets may be available at the door. Show starts at 7:30.
